Title: Trends of Interfacial Properties of Composites after Diverse Types of Aging by Various Micromechanical Evaluating Methods

Abstract: Fiber reinforced composites has been an area of active research for the past several decades due to their lightweight and good mechanical properties and used for a wide range of applications in aircraft, spacecraft, boats, automobiles, civil infrastructure etc. However, the aging of fiber reinforced composites is a major issue due to exposure of thermal, water and ultraviolet conditions. Continuous damage could bring about mechanical property degradation and micro-damage at the interface. Although their aging was insignificant effects such as micro crack at short time, continuous damage could bring about mechanical degradation and damage catastrophically. This is comprehensive trends on of aging effects in water, heat, ultraviolet etc. on composites and the changes in chemical, mechanical and interfacial properties, evaluated by nondestructive and micro-mechanical evaluations. It focuses particularly on composites with superior chemical, mechanical and interfacial properties, as well as good high resistance to aging, as these are considered to be one of the very important parameters for total performance of composite structural materials. Based on the nondestructive and micro-mechanical evaluations methods are suggested to reduce the diverse ageing effects at composites interface. Mechanical degradation and damage at the reinforcement/matrix interface can be a major issue in determining the durability of a composites structure. The surface flaws provide stress concentrations at cracks tips leading to failure at reduced stress levels. Seawater absorption can also lead to a reduction in the mechanical properties of composites, which has been attributed to degradation of fiber-matrix interfacial adhesion.
