Abstract: Epoxy syntactic paste adhesives (ESPA) are widely used for various aircraft interior applications. PPG has developed a spectrum of ESPA materials to enhance the manufacturing workflows of end-users, ensuring compatibility with both manual and automated processes. Through viscosity profile optimization, side-by-side cartridge format was achieved with fast extrusion rate for convenient material handling. Some products were further developed as pre-mixed frozen (PMF) grades, where materials are mixed and kept at freezing condition to extend shelf-life. PMF can be advantageous by eliminating mixing steps for the end-users, while still maintaining the curing characteristics under ambient conditions. Moreover, these adhesives have easy application properties including great slump-resistance and strong shear-thinning behavior for easy extrusion and handling. They have also undergone rigorous testing with automated systems, proving their efficacy in robotic applications. With the incorporation of environmental-friendly flame retardants, these materials showed excellent flame protection properties. The comprehensive evaluation of their mechanical properties has also yielded exceptional results, underscoring their reliability and performance in demanding aerospace environments.
