Abstract: This study investigates laser‑based surface texturing as a method for improving the lap-shear strength of lap joints. The work begins with a review of the state of the art in surface preparation techniques to improve joint efficiency. Conventional and modern approaches, including mechanical, chemical, and non-contact methods, are discussed to establish their benefits and limitations. Based on this background, bidirectional woven carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate was fabricated and used as adherends for single lap joints. Laser surface texturing was applied to the bonding region using a cross-hatch scanning strategy to generate controlled surface features prior to adhesive bonding. Single-lap joints were prepared in accordance with ASTM D5868 and tested under monotonic loading using a universal testing machine. Load–displacement response and lap-shear strength were recorded for untreated and laser-textured specimens. The experimental results show a significant improvement in the shear strength of laser-textured joints compared with untreated joints. Overall, this study provides a structured experimental basis for assessing laser surface texturing as a surface preparation method for CFRP adhesive bonding.
