Abstract: In unidirectional fiber reinforced composites (FRCs), where all the fibers are oriented in one direction, the strength of the composite is very high in the longitudinal, fiber direction, however, the mechanical properties are very poor in the transverse (90°) direction. In this work, a novel technique for embedding aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets into the interlaminar region of laminated composite structures is presented. As the CNT sheets were positioned with the CNT orientation perpendicular to the main reinforcing fibers to strengthen the composite in the transverse direction, we named this mechanism CNT nanobridging. SEM analysis was used to image the CNT sheets within the composite. Transverse flexure testing was used to determine the CNT nanobridging mechanism’s ability to improve the transverse mechanical properties and the results showed a 32.7% increase in the transverse tensile strength.
