Abstract: "Optically transparent fiber reinforced plastics (“transparent composites”) provide a unique opportunity to probe the potential of materials that not only achieve mechanical properties that are characteristic of composite materials, but also possess light transmission features that are more characteristic of see-through engineering plastics. Previous publications by the authors demonstrated such features in transparent composites fabricated from the combination of formulated composite resins from Kaneka Aerospace LLC (“Kaneka”) and proprietary S-2 Glass® and E-glass fibers from AGY Holding Corp (“AGY”). We report our initial investigations on these transparent composites towards industrial applications. Applications were selected based on the significance of benefits yielded by achieving both high mechanical and optical properties. Among the studies presented, accelerated light exposure experiments are highlighted to demonstrate UV resistance results of as-fabricated untreated panels, together with panels in which UV-resistance measures have been applied."
