Abstract: Electrical resistance was used to assess the damage development due to room temperature ballistic impact followed by tensile step fatigue for a laminate prepreg melt infiltrated SiC/SiC composite. The CMC specimens were first subjected to a ballistic impact at 350 m/s using hardened chrome steel ball. Fatigue, post impact, was performed for R = 0.1 for increasing peak stress/time intervals until failure. Acoustic emission and digital image correlation was also performed to assist in quantifying damage development during fatigue and interpret increasing electrical resistance. The electrical resistance was modeled utilizing a previously developed electrical model for this composite system based on the electrical resistivity of each ply in the laminate composite and the damage progression that occurred within the different regions of the composite.
