Abstract: This study demonstrates the automation of the prepreg layup process in the production of Carbon-Carbon Composites (CCCs), an important high-temperature material used in the aerospace and defense sectors. Traditionally, production of CCCs requires extensive labor and time that includes manual layup of prepregs. We introduce a smart robotic cell that nearly eliminates the manual labor involved, while enhancing production efficiency, quality, and consistency. We demonstrate the use of robotic automation for laying up phenolic prepreg on complex-shaped tools. Results show that the robotic cell can complete the layup process in nearly half the time of the manual process, while also reducing the human labor required. By integrating advanced robotic systems and focusing on non-automated tasks, particularly debulking and inspection, our work lays the groundwork for broader application of automated layup processes in CCC production, promising reductions in labor and enhancements in quality and consistency of these critical components.
