Abstract: "The increased use of electronic devices has driven a need for lightweight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to protect sensitive electronics, especially in communications and military applications. In this study, we present lightweight carbon fiber and glass fiber composites functionalized using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver nanowire (AgNW) for frequency selective EMI shielding. CNT/ AgNW sheets were laser-cut to form frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and were co-cured with glass and carbon fiber through an autoclave process. EMI shielding was measured for different fiber type, nanomaterial filler content, composite lay-up, and FSS design across a broad-band frequency range (4 GHz – 26.5 GHz) to characterize the effect of each parameter on frequency-selective EMI shielding. This study aims to make non-metallic EMI shielding materials more viable for military and commercial use by expanding the designability of composite EMI shielding materials.
