Abstract: Composites offer an attractive range of benefits for electric vehicle battery enclosures over incumbent metal designs. However, the thermal protection requirements (self-extinguishing and thermal runaway) present substantial barriers to entry into this application. Syensqo, previously part of Solvay group, have developed SolvaLite® 716FR, a rapid curing epoxy prepreg system that is designed to meet the thermal challenge. It exhibits UL94 V-0 self-extinguishing performance over a thickness range of 1 – 3 mm and across multiple product formats suitable for the application. It also passed the UL2596 Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway (BETR) test, at 2 mm gauge and higher, with thinner gauge laminates under evaluation.
