Abstract: Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) is a manufacturing process with discontinuous fibers that allows fiber orientation along curvilinear load paths. As a result, higher stiffness and strength can be achieved compared to laminates with continuous fibers. Currently, the design process of FPP laminates provides a reliable prediction of stiffness whereas strength and crack behavior are still part of research activities. With peridynamics, the failure and crack behavior can be numerically calculated by an integral approach of the internal forces. This new computational method is used to simulate failure and crack growth. The discretization of the laminate is done by single points. These points interact with each other in a defined region via bonds. If several bonds are detached, a crack is initiated in this area. In this paper, a peridynamic-specific material model for FPP laminates is developed considering the fiber discontinuities at the butt joints of each patch. This approach enables a simulation of various failure modes, including fiber failure, inter-fiber failure and delamination. FPP laminates with different lay-ups are used to validate the simulations. Therefore, tensile, compression and flexural tests are performed. It can be concluded that peridynamics enables a better failure understanding of laminates with discontinuous fibers.
