Abstract: AGY has introduced a new glass fiber called L-Glass® which has mechanical, electrical, and cost properties between those of E-glass and quartz fibers. Where E-glass is lower in cost and in performance while the quartz is high cost with higher performance. Using the L-Glass fibers woven by BGF Industries into an 8 Harness Satin (8HS) fabric (style 4781), Toray Advanced Composites (TAC) has produced a hot melt impregnated composite prepreg. Using three classes of polymer resin which includes an epoxy, a cyanate ester, and a hybrid epoxy-cyanate ester the L-Glass lamina produced were tested for mechanical and electrical (dielectric constant and loss tangent at 10 GHz per ASTM D 2520) properties. The L-Glass fabric room temperature ambient mechanical properties were tested using ASTM standards to compare to TAC historical testing data from 7781 E-glass, 6781 S-2 Glass® and 4581 Quartz on the same three resins to establish the performance, specific strength, and value proposition that the L-Glass provides. The report data can be used by radome designers as a selection guide to balance cost versus performance in both mechanical and electrical design spaces.
