Abstract: The housing crisis has emerged as a reality expanding from a regional to a global scale. Scientific and engineering solutions should be explored and integrated to make housing for all a feasible goal. This paper reviews the current developments in sustainable building materials like autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC, concrete with 80% air), cellulose, mineral wool, etc., and also discusses the importance of biomimicry in material microstructure design, engineering design strategies that support low cost, low energy consumption, and high thermal and windresistance capability. The concept of a sustainable reconfigurable manufacturing system (SRMS) with integrated IoT and AI, high flexibility, and adaptability defines the next generation of manufacturing. A dual approach that adopts sustainable materials and more efficient manufacturing processes can help alleviate the issues currently faced in this industry. The concept of SRMS can be useful when we try to transition from traditional to sustainable materials and processes in the construction industry. This paper reviews the planning needed to adopt SRMS in the construction industry, the current challenges, and the possible path forward.
